The third day
Today we are waiting for a trip to the ancient capital of the Georgian kingdom, Mtskheta, founded in the 5th century BC. The history of the founding of the city goes deep into the Biblical era, for this reason Mtskheta is called the second Jerusalem in another way. It is in this city that the chiton of Jesus Christ, in which he was crucified, is kept. There are the remains of fortified residences of the Armaza fortress, Bebristsikhe, urban quarters, burial grounds, as well as the Samtavro complex (the main temple of the XI century).
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral was and still remains the center of religious life and the main attraction of Mtskheta. The Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles is the first and main church in Georgia, whose name is traditionally translated as "life—giving pillar". It is one of the largest temples in the country and chronologically the first in Georgian temple history. In its modern form, it has existed since 1010, not counting individual perestroika. It is believed that the chiton of Jesus Christ was buried in the ground in this place, and subsequently a cedar tree grew here, which became a sacred tree for local residents.
On the mountain opposite Mtskheta, at the confluence of the two rivers Aragvi and Kura, we will visit one of the oldest monasteries in the country of the 6th-7th century, the temple of Jvari. Jvari Monastery is considered a masterpiece of Georgian church architecture. It is interesting from a historical and landscape point of view, as well as from an architectural point of view. Jvari is a symbol of Georgian temple architecture and an important stage in its difficult history.
Continuing your journey along the picturesque mountain road, you will find yourself in a beautiful corner, where the medieval monastic architectural complex of the 6th century, Shio Mgwime, is located. It was founded sometime after 560 by Saint Shio, one of the Assyrian fathers, known as Shio Mgvimsky. It was under the patronage of the princes of Amilakhvari for more than three hundred years and was their family tomb.
