This monastery complex is one of the main attractions of the XII—XIII centuries in the south of Georgia, an outstanding monument of medieval Georgian architecture. A high rock rises above the Kura and dozens of natural and man-made caves are visible in its sheer wall, like floors. Moreover, if dozens are visible from the shore of the Kura, then in fact there are hundreds of them — the rocky city consists of about 600 caves of natural and artificial origin and stretches along the river for about a kilometer.
Few travelers know that there is a delightful place in Georgia that is very difficult to describe in words. A place that has experienced so much joy and tears, a place where the rulers of Akhaltsikhe lived for a very, very long time. And it's all called the simple and hard word Rabat. The history of the fortress's foundation dates back to 1578. Today, everyone can take a walk through these beautiful places. Everyone can breathe in the air, which seems to scream and tell about the ancient greatness of Rabat, about the events that took place here and about those happy days that the fortress experienced. And there really were a lot of such days. It seems that all this beauty just came off the pages of a book with an Arabic fairy tale, and that the real sheikh and his concubines are hiding behind that bend. The whole atmosphere surrounding this place simply breathes those great events that took place here so many centuries ago.…

The eighth day
Racha
Today, our way lies to the historical mountainous region of Georgia in the upper reaches of the Rioni–Rachu River. This is one of the most picturesque corners of Georgia, where the Khvanchkara vineyards are located, only the endemic varieties of Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes grow here, from which Stalin's favorite wine was made. It turned out to be impossible to plant these grape varieties in other regions of Georgia, so the real Khvanchkara is made only here. These are very beautiful mountains, composed of limestone, with many caves and interesting rocks.
Our route will pass through the beautiful Nakerala pass, which is 1218m high. Along the way, you will enjoy the picturesque scenery of deciduous forests and rocky cliffs.
Above the pass is the peak of the Rachinsky range, Mount Tskhradzhvari (the mountain of the "Nine Crosses"), whose height is 1565m. You can climb the mountain by off-road vehicle on a dirt and rocky road. The panorama that opens from the lower observation deck is already quite enough for a flurry of emotions, but you can climb higher to the very top. There is a clearly visible path leading to it. At the top of Tskhradjvari are the ruins of an ancient temple, where nine iron crosses are installed. The tenth, the most massive, cross is placed at the highest point. . A trip to Tskhradjvari can be attributed to the mandatory routes when visiting the Rachinsky region. The views that open from the highlands cannot be described in words. There is always a persistent feeling of nature's victory over civilization.
Just beyond the Nakerala Pass, Lake Shaori is an artificial lake in the Shaori basin at an altitude of 1105m. The slopes of the reservoir are covered with coniferous forests and alpine meadows. The air is intoxicating and intoxicating, it smells of herbs and forest, separately with a needle and separately with a leaf, each bush breathes its own breath, the turquoise of the mirror of the water surface fascinates with the beautiful bottomlessness of the reflected sky. Thanks to the gorge, the lake has its own climate, no matter how hot it is nearby, it is always cool and fresh here.
On the western shore of the reservoir is the church of Nikortsminda (St. Nicholas), built in the 19th century. – the next goal of our route.Initially, there was a monastery here, but in the 16th century the church was restored and proclaimed the main cathedral of the Rachinsky region. Amazingly beautiful and preserved in its original form, the finest 500-year-old stone carvings adorn the facade of the temple and its dome, the carving patterns are exquisite and complex. Inside the cathedral there are wonderful frescoes and ornaments of the XVI-XVIII centuries. The church is stunning with its beauty, its poetic name is "white bride", it is a true masterpiece of Georgian architecture.
We will also visit the ruins of the Chelishi Monastery (Udabno), dating back to the 9th-20th centuries. The monastery is located in the gorge of the Shareula River. To this day, the temple has been preserved without a vault with remnants of lapis lazuli on the walls and two saints' faces. If desired, it is possible to descend to the wild karst cave in Gogolati and to the Thmori waterfall. The Sakinule Cave, a natural refrigerator hidden in the forest part of the rocky gorge, is interesting to visit. The cave got its name from the biting cold inside at any time of the year.
Let's see the temple of the Virgin of Barakoni (XVIII century), located on a steep cliff at the confluence of the rivers Rioni and Luhuni and immortalized the name of the creator Avtandil Shulavreli. This is one of the few temples that have preserved the name of the creator, not the customer. On the hill of the opposite shore, the ruins of the ancient Mindatsikhe Castle, where Queen Tamara spent her childhood, are visible.
