Secrets of the West (3 days)

You will have a unique three-day trip to Western Georgia, where you will learn the secrets of temples and the history of caves.

The first day

Departure to the city of Kutaisi

Mtskheta is the ancient capital of the Georgian Kingdom, founded in the 5th century BC.The history of the founding of the city goes deep into the Biblical era, which is why Mtskheta is called the second Jerusalem in another way.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral was and still remains the center of religious life and the main attraction of Mtskheta. The Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles is the first and main church in Georgia, whose name is traditionally translated as "life-giving pillar". It is one of the largest temples in the country and chronologically the first in Georgian temple history. It is believed that the chiton of Jesus Christ was buried in the ground in this place, and subsequently a cedar tree grew here, which became a sacred tree for local residents.

Continuing our journey along the picturesque mountain road, we will come to a beautiful corner where the medieval monastic architectural complex of the 6th century, Shio Mgwime, is located. It was founded sometime after 560 by Saint Shio, one of the Assyrian fathers, known as Shio Mgvimsky.

On the mountain opposite Mtskheta, at the confluence of the two rivers Aragvi and Kura, we will visit one of the oldest monasteries in the country of the 6th-7th century, the temple of Jvari. Jvari Monastery is considered a masterpiece of Georgian church architecture.

The ancient cave city is Uplistsikhe, it is carved into a rock located 12 km east of the city of Gori. The city appeared at the end of the II — beginning of the I millennium BC. e., experienced several ups and downs. The uniqueness of the monument lies in the fact that, thanks to its structure, it has preserved the remains of architectural and religious buildings built over several millennia.

Upon arrival in the city of Kutaisi, we will check in and stay overnight at the hotel.

The second day

In the morning of this day we will continue our journey towards Promethea Cave. You will have an exciting tour of the largest cave in Georgia — Kumistavi, renamed Prometheus Cave in 2010. After the cave was discovered in 1984, it was almost immediately made a tourist attraction.  Visiting the cave provides a unique opportunity to see the underground world of this region in all its glory. You can choose a 1600-meter hiking route through the caves and/or a boat trip along a real underground river. The route passes by breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, underground waterfalls, rivers and even an entire lake. A multi-colored underground lighting system based on liquid crystal lamps and classical music constantly playing in the cave adds a magical feeling to all this, which makes the route even more attractive and memorable.

Next, we will visit a unique natural monument with traces of prehistoric animals, one of the most memorable places is the Martvili Canyon. The finds of dinosaur footprints and bones, as well as the footprints of a caveman, have made the canyon a unique place important for world science. You can take a boat trip along the Martville Canyon, view its beauty up close and get an unforgettable experience. Martvili Canyon is an amazing and fascinating natural monument in Georgia.

At the end of this day, 50 kilometers from the city of Kutaisi, we will enter the canyon, which is the gorge of the Okatse River, from which it got its name. At the moment, it is one of the most popular natural attractions. The tourist center is located in the village of Zeda Gordi, and after visiting it, guests get on a trail that will eventually lead them to suspension bridges more than a kilometer long and 140 meters high above the cliff, which is about 45 floors. The sight is certainly exciting and in some ways extreme, especially for those who are not a big fan of heights. But before getting to the bridges, tourists pass a 2.2-kilometer-long trail stretching through a picturesque forest, where, in addition to natural beauty, you can explore the ruins of the 18th-century Dadiani Princes' palace.

Overnight in Kutaisi

The third day

Today, on our way to Tbilisi, we will stop at the Motsameta Temple. The surroundings of the temple are literally surrounded by greenery of trees that have grown here above the roofs of the monastery buildings. The domeless temple of Motsameta, founded at the beginning of the XI century by Tsar Bagrat III, is also called the Monastery of Saints David and Constantine. Here you can see all the beauty of the green mountains, listen to birdsong, breathe fresh air and just relax your soul.

On the other side of the canyon from the Motsameta Temple, we will visit the Gelati medieval monastery of the Virgin. The center of church and cultural life, the residence of the Catholicos from the 2nd half of the XVI century to 1814, a World Heritage Site. The monastery was founded by King David IV the Builder in 1106.Gelati is a branch of the Kutaisi State Historical and Ethnographic Museum.

The main attraction of the city of Kutaisi is one of the largest Bagrati temples in Georgia, which offers wonderful views of the whole of Kutaisi. The temple was built in Kutaisi during the reign of Bagrat III, as the main cathedral of his united Georgian kingdom and consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Virgin in 1003.Majestic in size and proportions, the temple has become a fundamentally new word in the history of Transcaucasian architecture. The temple was lavishly decorated with carvings and mosaics and played an exceptional role in the medieval history of Georgia.
